    James L. Culleton

    Chicago native James L. Culleton enlisted as an apprentice musician in January 1892. Following training in the Music Boys program at Marine Barracks Washington, he served as a drummer in Portsmouth, N.H., and Boston. He was named the 20th Drum Major of the Marine Band in 1909 and served until the end of his enlistment in 1911. He reenlisted in the Fleet Marine Force, serving the Marine Corps for nearly 30 years upon his retirement in 1919.
