I really wanted to post something, but my current painting isn't quite finished. In the meantime, this is one of my favourite paintings, by Group of Seven's, J.E.H. McDonald. I think I would like to "copy" this since I can't afford the original. Would that be questionable in any way? Statute of limitations is up so I can paint it right?
Uh. Did I post this before? I was probably on the blog when I first discovered it.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with that; but why not create your own? if I may ask? "L"
ReplyDeleteI create my own all the time. This would be something different but still kind of my own at the same time, having to interpret and invent ways of emulation. I would do it differently even if I tried not to. The end result could be me with a painting of historical painting I admire. If I am allowed to choose the objects I use as references, then I should be allowed to use another picture. If I'm painting an interior space with art in it, I wouldn't want to just leave those spaces blank out of fear of copying. If really pressed I could just say it's an "exercise" (where I get a lesson, and a nice painting).
ReplyDeleteit's beautiful. you should go for it - it would an amazing challenge and experience.
ReplyDeletemake two! One for me.
ReplyDeleteMy best learning came from direct copies of group of 7 and dali. I sold them all on e-bay... so I think the envelope is open.
ReplyDeleteReally, the important thing for me was that I learned new ways of applying paint. New ways of considering colour in relation to other colours on the canvas and most importantly, it proved that I was capable of emulating these complex works with pristine accuracy.
I am certain that you can copy this. it's just a matter of applying the effort.
I'll see if I can dig up one with the original.
