Leaning into the Light

A never ending rage

"How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one is fully aware of the blood, the horror inherent in life, when one finds darkness not only in one's culture but within oneself? If there is a stage at which an individual life becomes truly adult, it must be when one grasps the irony in its unfolding and accepts responsibility for a life lived in the midst of such paradox. One must live in the middle of contradiction, because if all contradiction were eliminated at once life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light." Barry Lopez

born to be a 'myspacer'. :p

that's what a couple of my cartoonist 'friends' told me when i posted this on my 'myspace' profile a few weeks ago. just goin' thru a pre-mature mid-life crisis type thing i guess?? pulling out old photos and reminiscing 'til i puke from crying a freaking river of sorrow. LOL... enjoy my naked chest from years gone by (circa 1992). :p

ooh... there's some off the wall paintings (on the wall) in the background that i did during regular art class at TCI. do you remember those james? they're similar in style to those 'earth day' posters i taped up all around the high school. i guess some one saw value in them cuz they were stolen only a few hours later. i wish i knew who took them? they could have just asked or given me money. haha.

go

ps. i knew that this photo would come in handy one day. what the hell else would i use it for anyhow? LOL... *sigh* thanks justin for giving me a reason to post this! ;) *hee-hee*

can't remember if i ever posted this or not. i made it during sunday night craft nights at our friend claire's place.
(see www.craftinclaire.blogspot.com)

in any case, it's post # 1701.

so close to the earth

bodies begin in the rivers fresh shallows
crusted mud footprints tell their tales
they are fierce and awake the river people
they are revolting the death of a distant lake

deep lines cut long across my face
dripin' in the hot afternoon sun
storms brood their distant thoughts
across the horizon void of mountaintops

by the faint shadow of the pale moon
don't speak with me again of death
i've had The Sigil on my door before
and fear not the slow fallling drops of blood

command then the thunder to fall not upon your ears
please end the taste of the ocean in all our tears

dolphins have... names?

by deborah zabarenko on yahoo.ca

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Bottlenose dolphins can call each other by name when they whistle, making them the only animals besides humans known to recognize such identity information, scientists reported on Monday.
Scientists have long known that dolphins' whistling calls include repeated information thought to be their names, but a new study indicates dolphins recognize these names even when voice cues are removed from the sound.
For example, a dolphin might be expected to recognize its name if called by its mother, but the new study found most dolphins recognized names -- their signature whistles -- even when emitted without inflection or other vocal cues.
More than that, two dolphins may refer to a third by the third animal's name, said Laela Sayigh, one of three authors of a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"They are known to produce these individually distinctive signature whistles, like names," Sayigh said in a telephone interview. She said the researchers wanted to know what information in the whistles helped dolphins identify each other's names.
The scientists already knew that dolphins responded to whistles, but wondered if something in the actual voice of the whistling dolphin was making the identity clear, or if the name itself was enough for recognition.
To find out, they studied bottlenose dolphins in Sarasota Bay, Florida. Instead of playing recordings of actual dolphins making signature whistles, the researchers synthesized signature whistles with the caller's voice features removed and played them to dolphins through an underwater speaker.
In nine out of 14 cases, the dolphin would turn more often toward the speaker if it heard a whistle that sounded like a close relative's.
"It's a very interesting finding that encourages further research, because they are using whistles as referential signals -- that's what words are," said Sayigh, of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. "Dolphins appear to be using these arbitrary signals to identify another dolphin."
She stopped short of saying dolphins might have a human-like language.
"I tend to shy away from using the word 'language' myself, because it's such a loaded term," Sayigh said. "I still really feel strongly that there is no evidence for something like our language. (Dolphins) have got the cognitive skills at least to have referential signals."

The red spinner

The garden swealters.
I hear the cerated edges
of tomato leaves sawing
the air itches,
my skin blisters with sweat,
feet suffocating in rubber boots.
Insects descend from the sun
and snapzzzz around my shins.
The vines on the wall steal more space
underground,
the vines steal more oxygen.

I reach for the tap,
the hose choaking its way along brick patio
and underground.
I grip the red spinner, now
the insects cover my knees
snapping and scratching.
I turn on the water, like turning on the world:
hear the metal-twisting-fooshroosh
in the tap
and the hose gets fat, convulses, underground
the worms corkscrew to the surface
pink tongues
swirling out of the muck,
full and feeling.

I start to sink down,
the insects drown clinging to the hive.
Mud oozes into my nostrils, choaks my throat
and gurgles its way into my lungs.
My chest burns, fire-hot,
an ember in the black garden swamp.
I am fossil fuel.
I suffocate from oxygen
and breathe the earth.

photoshop experiments #1

lately, i've been learning photoshop. right now i'm just trying out random bits of other people's text (lenny cohen and j kerouac, for now) on my pics, but eventually i'm going to start doing two part pieces-- my own images and writing. then maybe printing them up and collagin on top of them...?

what's funny is that the next pic was the only shot of the 300 or so that i took in ottawa last summer that was any good. i was on the bus testing out exposure times.

several quick points:

1-- the gallery scored big tonight. the entire board of a certain local ART place (in our CITY) attended tonight's opening of "huts and hideaways". it was a show organized by a woman who ran a workshop with the kids at art city on broadway.

tonight's entertainment provided by a minute fraction of the god(Queen)Kings a.k.a. The Greywanderer.

the board of this ART place in our CITY was very pleased with everything.

it seems they will likely continue to work with our humble gallery.

tonight was truly an auspicious hour.

2-- i've edited my profile. it's funny.

3-- ren is writing papers (or banging her head against the brick wall of knowledge... whichever). cDog is being intense somewhere in t-dot, trying to figure out the one, single word that will alter time and the universe. dryHump is dryHumping. bluemask is staring at a canvas to see who blinks first. macro is drawing dots in far korea. kidkrahn is touring like a rock n' roll star. flowerPowers (a.k.a. reedah) is hanging out w/ her kid sister in charleshood. knackerson is half-knackered, and is parenting (regurgitating half-digested lupine food for the pup). jejq is wondering if poetry makes you go mad. the greywander (aka capt goldstar) is on fire, like a phoenix. go is blogging and drawing and drawing and drawing and... wolf boy is crawling on all fours w/ his cats, trying to understand their language. cara is sitting at home thinking about history ( and her wee bebe crawled around in the "huts and hideaways" tonight). dangerman is drinking brewskis with the boys.

how do we know so many wacky, crazy, awesome people?

Carpe Diem

Burning of cold,
whispering knowledge
yet unformed
clay, flesh and stone.

I draw no lines
yet I am so
set in my way,
so rigidly defined.

Am a difficult man
to inspire higher
my far away eyes,
parted indifferent smile.

Her gaze pure and true,
through me into you
a moment taken and kept
to love and protect.

Fear no mirror my love, my medusa
Fear nothing now I've found you.

at the insistence of "wild bill" lobchuck...

1/4 of the godkings cast their magicke spell on the carfac social last night. the gods were invoked, and the room became lit with a strange and eerie intensity. all was joy, and wild bill left offerering of beer at our feet. hopefully, pics will follow at some point.

Response to Luminous Boy

A luminous boy indeed
little light kept bright
creating strings of love
tears and joyous shouts across
streams of Web
and
small smiles
sunrises and
lupine pacing paternal
and the vessel cradles
great anticipation
and they (all)
watching this time

where he lays his head
what his eyes tell
of who he might
be.

Sigils

A sigil is a symbol created for a specific magical purpose. The term sigil derives from the Latin sigilum meaning "seal," though it may also be related to the Hebrew segulah meaning "talisman". The old norse binding rune is an example of the idea. However, sigils differ from runes as they are designed not to represent an alphabet but are created to form a glyph, composed of a variety of symbols or concepts which carry intent and inherent iconic meaning.

A sigil may have an abstract, pictorial or semi-abstract form. It may appear in any medium, physical or virtual, or only in the mind. Visual symbols are the most popular form, but the use of audial and tactile symbols in magick is not unknown.

Sigilis are commonly found in Jewish mysticism and Kabbalistic magic upon which much of Western magic is based.

There is a theory that sigils are memes that are consciously used as magical tools by businesses (such as Coca-Cola and McDonald's, with their highly-recognized corporate logos), and invest them with a comparable degree of prestige and power.

I had a vision where I went to folkfest and sat on the hill to watch the sunrise and the Lord came down in all it's glory and the angels were there and in general it was a miracle Jubilation etc. But no one was around and so I went down to rally everyone but everyone was in their tents playing with their computers. Many people were looking at pictures of each other on the internet. And all the pictures were of the people themselves sitting at their computers. Meanwhile the Sky father was giving his spectacle and nobody would wake up.

The moral of the story is that the world is better than any virtual world. Except perhaps for the astral world. Is there some connection bewteen the astral world and the virtual cyber world?

I think we go into the cyber world because we aren't content with our mundane world.

So lets make our mundane world better people. It's the only way. We need to all have a lot of sex and live in color and get a lot of sunshine and excercise.

Art would be better if everything was art. Then Art would be meaningless. If someone were to start scribbling on a blank canvas everyone else would be like "Hey man, quit messing up that beautifull, perfect blank canvas" Actually, I guess everyone else would just think that dude was crazy and they would keep looking at the sunrise or the clouds or the river.

Who could paint a better oeuvre than that sunrise? What photo could capture it? Why should I try? Wouldn't it be better to be able to experience it and live it moment per moment?

If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear as it is. Perfect.

Of course I don't claim that my doors are polished. Indeed I consume vast ammounts of deliriants and intoxicatns daily just like window wipers in a car in order to wipe away the routine onslaught of grimy filthy boringness that is the almost never-ending rainstorm of the status quo.

And here I am writing this meaningless message on the very technological system that I seek to destroy. Here I am for some reason casting this mental image of myself thinking about how crappy the internet is as I am writing on the internet.

Nonetheless,
Please be with me on the hill when the sun rises at folkfest. You won't regret it.
