Advice?

Okay, folks...

I need advice.

A certain local daily newspaper which I am known to write for on occasion has, for the *3rd friday in a row* failed to pay me for the work I did for them in March. I was told by an editor last week that they would "look into it". Haven't heard back from him, nor have I been paid. Obviously they will pay me eventually, and I can live without the money for another week, but to me, this seems to require some very definitive action on my part.

Thoughts?

Quit.

Pursue your other low profit professions. (drummer, novelist, collagist)

But really, not a good idea. I'm sure they'll resolve the issue. Be patient, and use some good olde fashion guilt in the meantime.

We should try to practise with Goldstar tonight. Krahn can't make it. (we were tired of his wanking ways anyways.)

Persistantly ask the appropriate people where your money is. Be polite, but annoying. Like a mosquito in their ears. People will pay you to get out of their hair.

Patience and persistence.

And if this is any indication, it is time to let these losers go.

you're all right, of course.

i guess my feeling is that, now that i've bugged them once about it (last week), basic respect and professional courtesy means i shouldn't have to again.

i don't *mind* bugging them. i just feel like it indicates a serious lack of respect on their part-- not even a follow-up email to say "here's what's happening w/ your pay".

You are a writer!!

If I were you I would write a letter of the situation to the payroll office and CC it to the section editor.

Being treated as a professional is something you expect when you become a professional.

Letter:

To XXX:

So, again, for the third week in a row, I have not been paid.

To be perfectly honest, this entire episode suggests to me that the Winnipeg XXX lacks respect for me as both a person and an employee, and has left a very bad taste in my mouth regarding my employment there. This has been furthered by the lack of any communication/updates with me on this issue in several days.

I would appreciate this issue being resolved immediately so that I don't have to continue following up on this or take further action.

Too hostile. Unless of course you want to create more waves.

I remember this one time I wasn't getting paid for a mural I was doing at the Java Zone and I questioned the owner, named Max. It made him angry and shortly after that he fired me and white washed my half finished mural. No cash for me. I went to court and was compensated for my supplies, but none of my time. Yucka.

So I think a letter like the one you're proposing will be a little harsh. How about:

Letter:

To XXX:

Re: Missed Pay

I have not been paid for three weeks.

I would appreciate this issue being resolved immediately.

Please advise,

LR

Maybe a hard copy, maybe on emailed, maybe an email, CC the people needed. Maybe suggest payment in advance from now on...

well, thanks for the advice, but i already sent it.

there is a forumla in place-- i send the articles in on time, invoice the paper at the end of the month, and then get paid for it on the first friday of the next month.

so it's not really something there should ever be discrepencies or negotiations about.

anyway, i heard back. looks like i'm getting paid *next* friday.

something about lost emails or something.

now someone PLEASE change the topic. this one makes me feel yucky inside.

My advice is for you to give permission to remove this post.

Good idea, it has nothing to do with art.

Lorne Roberts said...

no, that's ok, thanks.

however, on further reflection, let me state this:

--if someone is suggesting removing this post to spare me the cringe-inducing feeling it will produce, there's no need. I'm ok w/ my fits of pique being in the public eye-- my occassional silliness and poor judgement is part of who I am, for good or bad.

--as far as the "not arty enough" idea... i consider all of you on here my friends. If I can't post/share something I'm going through, or ask advice b/c it's not "arty" enough for the blog, well... that's just kind of odd (although, in fairness, Mr. Anon didn't object to it being posted in the first place).

it`s about "the art of getting paid" as far as I`m concerned.

Lorne Roberts said...

heh.

and, uh, i do sometimes write about art in order to get paid, so...

And... writing is a form of art. Not getting paid for a mural, portrait, tattoo, or writing = art related news.
