There is currently a battle of ownership going on at the Beaverbrook gallery in Fredicton NB over a collection of some 133 paintings, including one by Lucien Freud. Altough I have known of his work for a while now, I just found out that he is the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Man, that's sure going to affect someone's work, no?

yeah, for sure. that rope on her bathrobe? clearly a phallic symbol. the dog obvisouly ID's her as his mother figure, and therefore lusts after her, with the exposed breast symbolizing their intimacy but also his hidden sexual impulses. look at his face--he's clearly thinking about sex.

Weird. I bought a postcard of this very painting when I was in London at the Tate. An incredible painting to see in the flesh.
At the very least, having such heritage would propel one into the spotlight fairly quickly. Either way, he was bound to be famous...luscious, painterly and content based work. I love everything I've seen of his. I always thought that Tony Scherman’s (http://www.tonyscherman.com) figurative stuff is derivative of Lucien's work, something about the exaggerated eye spacing and pallor skin tone. Lisa Yuskavich is one too, however, she's just connected to him somewhere in my mind, perhaps not in reality.
