That particular stretch of highway,
rolls over,
exposing its belly
for a jackhammer-caesarean,
tearing up root and structure
and rebar.
An architect’s vision of speed,
in a succession of motorists -
once loved, once agonized over,
now split open and crumbling.
Tired and falling down to rest with the bums.

"for a jackhammer-caesarean"
Money!
I remember one time I was on the autobahn in Germany and a little smartcar blew by me doing what must have been 200km! Those little cars can really move.
I don't get how the bums fit in, the piece made me feel like I had witnessed a traffic jam/pile-up accident, highway turned up by an earthquake or something and then the bums. Not that I don't like the bums, I love bums.
Hmmm, part of me wants to tell you about the bums - but the other part says guessing is half the fun!
