Are we up for it (click on the images)

This is the Haka, a war dance from Maori

This is Kailao from Tonga

This is the Manu Siva Tau from Samoa

In this last one, you get the sense of what may have really happened in a battle; crazy - but here, of course, there always has to be that one guy, yuck.

What about his work, his actions?

Threes play two in every little detail

settled
in,
and the danger

softened
and
candied in instants

the greatest
tag team
in the world

Red and purple paper

the warm
billows

discovering
its length
in a mould
of perfection

stretching
comfortable

opening in
red and
purple paper

Desire, Attachment, etc.

I wrote this sitting in the Millenium Library, March 28/06 (the first few lines were inspired by something cara had written, the rest by our discussions at the time, but it now seems relevant again...)

We will still need this need
all of us
me here steeping in our anger
at the library

we will still need
this

something else
something other

than this

need

it's always the same
for us monks, nuns, etc

all of us swearing off desire,
disavowing the flesh

and yet it tortures us and
we will fall in love and have children,
lose our cool and

develop attachments to things

even though we know
they will break us

and our
hearts in
the end

do everything we said
we would never do like
grow old and
see friends less and
become attached to this body we live in

and so it didn't work out and we still suffer still
desire

and it's our last chance to turn around and
follow silence into our own graves and we decline
the priesthood,
keep being
in love and
feeding our cats and
fighting against weakness and ourselves and
each other and no
mortification of the flesh no
self-flagellation can
turn this around so

what else to do but
go on

in love.

December 27

Do you see me
hot spoons heated on stove elements
scooping out
soft, pink middle
turned over my earth
piled me neatly next to my desk:
a n old, wooden, kitchen table
where admist the finger paints, greek heroes and da Vinici mystified
the poem you’ve left
come
you must wonder
about the embers of your words
you liked so much you wrote them down
does your copy glow like mine
now
lain out on the floor
I walk over
in faith of healers, snake charmers and fortune tellers now defunct
as air
smelling of that truth
of flesh
fuels the flame.

Thank you Gideons

O Faithless Daughter -For A.P.

Don't go on living
on the words of a postcard

Far away the explorer goes
to a frameless sunsets colour

to a whisper at the worlds edge
one foot enough in light to hold

and read the roadmarks well
along the way by which you went

While far away thoughts return
round that arch in your smile.

This is a devotional image. My personal GodKing is depicted accompanied by his spirit guide a large white tiger. King Louis/Che/myself is pointing to a stone age rocket in the distance, taking off and revealing a fairy princess on a raised dias in the middle of a Manitoba Winter.

Hanuman the monkey man ever faithfull servant of the good king ram in Hindu Mythology. Hanuman is worshipped by policemen and firemen and soldiers. He is the immecable servant, completely devoted to his chosen cause and leader; the good king Ram.

The secret is that miraculously both Ram and Hanuman are aspects of a single greater entitiy the mighty Shiva. They are in a state of perpetual forgettfullness that they are each both Master and servant.

Wherever the deeds of Sri Rama are sung, At all such places does Hanuman cry tears of devotion and joy, At all such places does his presence remove the fear of demons.

This work is an occult channelling of higher vibrational energies. Using my body as a conductor and receiver and puppet, I entered a state of altered perception and was manipulated by my higher gepetto. Who is the Gepetto of Many.

Of course I cannot deny the involvement of my ego, my personal imprint and desire to manipulate and control the world around me, seeing myself as the central figure in my own movie for the benifit of all.

The Ballad of Pancho and Lefty

For those unfortunate souls who missed the best show ever last night, the D-Rangers and Luke Doucet (guitarist for Sarah Mclachlan for a few years, and brother of our very own j.d. ormond) totally rocked.

this post doesn't do them justice, but it's the lyrics from "the ballad of pancho and lefty" by townes van zandt-- they performed it last night and it was amazing.

(Townes van Zandt)

Livin' on the road my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
And your breath's as hard as kerosene
You weren't your mama's only boy
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams

Pancho was a bandit, boys
His horse was fast as polished steel
Wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Well, Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
And nobody heard his dyin' words
Ah but that's the way it goes

All the Federales say
They could have had him any day
Only let him hang around
Out of kindness I suppose

Lefty, he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows

Well, the poets tell how Pancho fell
And Lefty's livin' in a cheap hotel
The dessert's quiet and Cleveland's cold
So the story end's, we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true
But save a few for Lefty too
He only did what he had to do
And now he's growin' old

A few gray Federales say
Could have had him any day
Only let him go so long
Out of kindness I suppose

The Other Manitoba

There's an interesting article in the New York Times today about Mennonites in Bolivia. What really caught my eye was the name of their town: Manitoba. There's an Alberta, too.

Not really art-related, but I thought others here might enjoy reading such incongruities as: "With no television or Internet access in Manitoba, news of developments in the capital often reaches the farmers through word of mouth. Sometimes they stop to chat at the general store operated by Abraham Martens, where buggies line up outside on a dirt parking lot."

Trees of Korea and Cuba

This post is inspired by James' recent tree photos.

I love trees... I consider them as living representations of the time they have passed through on this planet. A visual record of the passage of the seasons, wind and weather, written into the formation of their branches, their character and shape, the texture and colour of their outer surface. They draw up the inert matter embedded in the soil, and bathe in the suns' rays. And when they die, they leave behind one of the most useful products we have ever found in nature - wood.

Hooray for trees!
