well, mercury is sacry, but there are of course a million other factors to weigh in this.
for e.g., how much mercury is used or produced during the making of regular bulbs? does the energy savings equal compensation for the mercury in the new bulbs (I'd say no, but...)? in the end, is the oveall environmental cost still lower? (I'd say maybe).
Maybe, yeah, but, these things all end up in the landfill. I don't recall any HAZMAT notifications to dispose of any lightbulbs until these showed up. Kind of like how the computer was supposed to reduce paper waste. The opposite has happened thanks to personal printers/photocopiers. kind of like how automated touch tone phones were supposed to be more convenient than humans answering calls. Dammit, it's 2009! Where is my air-feuled flying car???
