I do this all the time. I have left a ton of stuff in my back lane that gets taken, usually within a couple of hours - and brought home more things that I have likewise found left out by others. Often things come in and then go back out by the same method.

I also had a fake Christmas tree with toys underneath set up. The toys went, but no tree takers in the heat.
