It's a protest of some kind (from what I can remember)against beautiful art/subjects. He (maybe they) tried to go in the opposite direction, make something disgusting. I saw one at some gallery either in Chicago or Minneapolis (during art school field trip). You could see the little veins under the skin and it was mega creepiness.
