p.s. if you ever doubted canada was still a christian country, observe the whole economy shutting down for a few days to mark "the death and resurrection of our lord and saviour jesus christ".
also this weekend marks the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, canada's historic entry on the world's stage of war. (more to come on that).
wars...are things that most of us can't understand...thank you for reminding us...that at some point...our foreparents lived through that...it's so easy to forget...that we are born of war...
Good question bluemask. I never felt there was a justification for any war, but when I came here to Korea and leraned a bit about it and, well, now I'm more confused actually. I think it's a bit of a pickle. Does passivity beget "survival of the motherfuckerest"*?
(*Thanks Jake Kociuk for getting me thinking and first stating in a visual arts piece)
Maybe the idea is to let them all kill each other then crawl out from under the rubble, aka the meek inheriting the trash pile. Or is war just sometimes?
Your studio looks great. You artists work hard.Made me wonder where the fruits of my labour are exactly?
On to the History: Is neutrality the same thing as the "peacekeeping" thing. That has always confused me, since most peacekeeping soliders are sent to places where there isn't much peace to speak of.
I also have the same question. What to do when the motherfuckers use violence, do we just sit and wait, watch, or sanction?
Wolf boy, interesting that you bring up the whole Easter/Canada is still a Christian nation statement. I agree.
I have a lot of students in my class from Korea, China, India, Vietnam, Taiwan, and they were asking me to explain good friday to them. So, I had a little religious history lesson, touched on Passover too. We got into "eurocentrism" and "structural racism and discrimination" and even some "white privillege" discussions. All compliments of looking at the calendar. It also gave the class to learn about other celebrations. Like Children's day in Korea and China.
Anyways, I don't buy into that lowest common demoninator equality where we start to call Christmas, winter festival or anything, I just wonder how we are honouring these Canadians and their rituals and celebrations.
A Love for Art was a collaborative blog for visual artists, musicians, writers, and social scientists. This blog has evolved into a new blog called BETA, go check it out!

Why do we pride ourselves on the bravery of Vimy Ridge whilst priding ourselves on being neutral in current conflicts?
