Did you write Hary Boyle on purpose? I know how you feel about her...

haha. That's funny. But a mistake, I will fix.

But don't get me wrong, I like her work about as much as I like Daniel Barrow's work.

marcel dzama hasn't lived in wpg for, like, 5 years. if they want to include him, they should add a NYC category.

ditto Jon Pylypchuk, who has lived in LA for a decade or so.

It begs the question "what is a canadian?" Obviously living in Canada doesn't matter. I suppose where you're born begins the conversation. Neil Young hasn't lived in Winnipeg or Canada for God knows how long, yet he's Canadian.
The Sobey Art Foundation's Sobey Art Award is Canada's pre-eminent prize for a young Canadian artist.
A panel of curatorial advisors, consisting of a representative from a major gallery in each of five regions (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies and the North, and West Coast), develops the shortlist.

Past winners have included Tim Lee, Michel de Bruin, Annie Pootoogook, and Brian Jungen.

I believe that Jon has purchased a house in Winnipeg (a few years back)where he lives with his family. He works in LA where he has retained a studio.

I don't approve of this. I agree with wolfboy. Their current location should be included, seeing how they probably contribute to their current art scene.
I'm born and partialy raised in the Maritimes yet I have almost been in Quebec longer than "back home" but I am still Canadian. lol (As if Quebec would ever be another country)

I think part of their success is in that they take left the Prairie, but with them they took their Prairie ideals.

In fact, any success that they have away from their homeland could be a cause of their exotic, Winnipeg roots. "Ohhh, you're from Winnipeg, that explains everything."

It's not so say that artists who stay at home and make masterpieces in their basements aren't great, I think this award is about spreading the word. Look at a guy like Paul Butler, sure he might have a homebase in Winnipeg but he's all over the road map. And that's why people know him.

Speaking of location isn't Althea Thauberger from Vancouver?

The Shortlist for the Sobey Art Award 2009

- For Immediate Release -

2009 Sobey Art Award Shortlist Announced - Five artists in the running for $70,000

Halifax, May 1, 2009 - The Curatorial Panel of the 2009 Sobey Art Award today announced the names of five exceptional Canadian artists selected for the 2009 Sobey Art Award Shortlist:

For the West Coast and Yukon: Luanne Martineau; for the Prairies and The North: Marcel Dzama; for Ontario: Shary Boyle; for Québec: David Altmejd; and for the Atlantic: Graeme Patterson.

"Faced with the benefit of a uniformly strong selection of candidates, the jury came to a unanimous consensus on this year's shortlist. Addressing both the local and the global, these artists make works that encapsulate materiality and conception, scale and complexity, representation and irrationality. Each artist shares a depth of commitment to their creation and exploration of idiosyncratic worlds that are real, imagined, and fantastical.” 2009 Curatorial Panel

Selected work from the shortlisted artists will be featured in an exhibition hosted by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and will run from September 5 to November 5 of 2009.

The winner of the 2009 Sobey Art Award will be announced during a gala event at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia on October 15, 2009.

The 2009 Sobey Art Award Curatorial Panel comprises: Liz Wylie, Curator, Kelowna Art Gallery; Kitty Scott, Director, Visual Arts - The Banff Centre; Ivan Jurakic, Curator, Cambridge Galleries; Louise Déry, Director, Galerie de l'UQAM; Terry Graff, Curator & Deputy Director; Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
