It's hard to do in such a general way. If we start talking about the principles of art, aerial perspective, high contrast foregrounds to create the illusion of depth, you've probably heard all that stuff before. It comes down to ideals a lot of the time. It might not do you any good if we all just start telling you our ideals (which don't even match half the time =P). It would be better if we got to know yours a bit.
For this landscape for example, would you prefer it to be flat or have depth, or to be generalized and soft, or sharp and realistic? When you say the tree, what is it you would like to see different? A more natural looking tree or a better design depicting a tree? Or a real tree?
It does remind me of Tolkien's drawings. There is a children's book he wrote called Mr. Bliss, which is full of illustrations he made (there are some of his illustrations in The Hobbit, too).
