neat. they even use their real names, they must be green to it all.

I like seeing something that resembles what we do here. Although where it differs is by first glance it looks like their site is a bunch of people who graduated together(art school maybe?)

When I pop on he blog and see new posts by new members, and the blog just chugging along I feel a sense of pride, it's weird, but I feel proud. Proud to be a a part of this crazy thing called blog.

But we've gotta have standards right?

Here's a few of mine:
(please don't take offense)
1. No posting other people's images without permission.(use a link)
2. No shameless self promotion of upcoming events.(use a link if you want to mention it, but don't make it the subject of your post)
3. keep it about art (or culture)

too much?

I know I'm guilty of breaking number one... though I do try and link from the image to its original home. In my mind, having the image itself is more likely to draw people to follow the link if they like what they see.

I was actually reading an interesting article recently somewhere online about net plagiarism, specifically talking about blogs. However, they were referring specifically to the act of copying text, and also specifically about blogs that were making a profit by drawing lots and lots of hits in the process. I don't think anyone here is trying to take credit for anyone else's work, and I'm sure no one is making a profit off this blog!

Other thoughts??

i think trying to say what people can and can't post is not so good, frankly.

and what is "art or culture"? does that mean we can't discuss, say, political issues? religion? or do those fall under "culture"?

also, knack, you recently posted other people's images without a link (or w/out crediting them until a few days later).

i think as long as it's tasteful, not hateful/racist/vulgar, etc, people should post whatever they want, including shameless self-promotion. i know i sure will.

Lorne Roberts said...

...although "vulgar" is a rather subjective term, i suppose, open to lots of debate and interpretation.

nothing more than some simple guidelines, poles to operate in between perhaps(DM).

It's actually Blogger(the almighty server) that suggest not to post anything without cred. I've certainly been guilty of it in the past, but have been trying to mend my ways. That's for pointing out the obvious Lorne.

but on the other hand we aren't trying to profit, so who cares? hmmm.

maybe what I'm trying to say too is that when we post certain things we shine, and we post other things we shine less.

And I know I'll never stop wolfboy from posting shamelessly about himself and his work. he's wolfboy, after all.

And lastly, much too much control. :)

Everything for everyone. That is the true goal.

nothing for no-one.

that is the no-goal of nothingness.

how about "shameful" self promos?

J C said...

Oh yeah, another rule! no double posting. all ORIGINAL material, never been posted before, never been posted on your personal blog especially. can you handle that?

co-authoring democrisis!

J C said...

I think with self promos, if you can tie it in to a post, rather than make it the subject of the post...but that's just one artists opinion.

TheBlueMask said...

too many rules, Viva la Freeee blog. Just an opinion. I think that anything someone posts falls under the category of self promo. Artistic expression.
No fun, my babe, no fun.
When something is deemed dull, tacky, or hateful, let the comments decide. Does it cost anyone anything? Throwing thoughts, re-posts, promos are all revevant to the responses.
Communist blogs are boring.
Or, make it easier, what IS allowed?

D.Macri said...

I didn't think proposing a few rules was such a bad idea. Any system has rules. In our case they were just unspoken ones. At least keep #1...

1. No posting other people's images without permission and artist credit.

* Use a link. {picture links should be ok if you point out that the picture is actually a link, and say the "artist{s}" name in the title}.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see other peoples art, and am excited everytime someone brings a new thing to view. It's just, I would be pretty miffed If was searching through someone elses site and found my art, with no reference to me. I suppose it is possible that such a thing may already exist, I have no security features on my images, other than politely asking people not to exploit me. Sure, sure, we are not intending to exploit people (quite the opposite: a celebration maybe), and are not making money, but we are also not paying anyone, and some of these people might be trying to feed little hungry mouths with thier pretty pictures (hard work).

4 rules is hardly a "communist" regime, and I would say one {rule} is a reasonable compromise.

Thoughts?

This is an interesting line of discussion....art and culture eh? I can see where you're going with that Knacks, but honestly, I kinda think that means just about everything. Personally, I kinda let "a love for art" guide what I choose to post.

I recognize that a few basic rules can help things along, but predictability may come as a result.
