Happy Saddam Day

Why would you kill the guy on New years?
I wonder if it was him or a double.

In a most bizarre stories ever heard, some people in Baghdad are claiming that they are seeing Saddam’s ghost in Baghdad public areas. Sources say, this may be a plot by the Baathists to keep Saddam ‘alive’ among the Sunni communities.

Some claim he is seen in restaurants, markets and so on. It is possible many Saddam look-alikes are now more prominent and people are mistaking these look-alikes as possible Saddam. It is also possible that Saddam was such a threat that people just cannot believe he is dead and not coming back.

I saw Saddam and Elvis at the Superstore in Polo Park. Can you guess what was in their baskets?

Is Elvis a martyr too?

hah! I knew I could count on you guys for a chuckle, thanks Cara.

Arguably it was Elvis' fame(or fans) that killed him. In that sense he was one of rock n rolls martyrs. (alongside Lennon and Morrison). Although Saddam was much older when he died.

Martydom is powerful. Look at our buddy Louis Riel.

ahem, Lennon was assasinated. Morrison and Presley basically killed themselves. Is there martyrdom from eating or drinking yourself to death? Can suicide of any form truly make a martyr? I`m sure some history buffs here will tell me.

Yes Suicide can make a martyr like Cobain.

Morrison and Presley didn't kill thmesleves explicitly. They just lived so hard until they finally burst like baloons. They are martyrs of givin'r.

Not to nit-pick, but New Year's is a Western holiday, Islam has it's own calender.

However Saddam was killed on the eve of an important Muslim holiday (the end of the Hajj I believe). The thinking was, from what I understand, it's best to have it done with, the sooner we string him up, the sooner we can start anew (a new year's day in a sense.) But of course while making the Shiites and Kurds happy, you've upset the Sunnis :( What's an government to do in the midst of such chaos?

As for martyrdom, I don't think it matters how old you are, so much as the circumstances surrounding your death. Saddam may be viewed by a martyr by some, but really isn't a martyr supposed to have done something good or valuable for humanity in his life and death?

To paraphrase "A Prairie Home Companion:" The death of a despot is not a tragedy (or a martyrdom.)

Im not sure how many exactly Saddam killed in his day but Im guessing it's a fraction of those who have died since the invasion.

fact: Saddam was also hung on a Hindu holy day specifically designated to make martyrs (im not making that up)

Saddam will be considered a martyr because he was a figurehead in the Islamic war against Western Imperial Invasion.

And I beleive that is a noble fight.
