OK you all should check out the site belonging to Kathryn Beaton, she has quite the collection of historical (and largely Canadian) comics going!

I may have screwed up this post, just right-click on the image then "view image" to see it larger, and more legible...

That is so funnny! Way funnier then the very serious art show 'subconcious city' that I just saw at the WAG. Drip some christine fellows and john k on there and I wanted to cry. sob sob sob.

I like how the cartoon becomes more about the beard than about time. too good.

kk,
I was at the same show...I missed the serious part, but hell I was too busy chatting up some guy who looks like James Culleton but with no beard. strange but true.

what I learned at SUBCONCIOUS CITY:
Real artists don't reproduce, and single moms will never be artists either, due to low productivity.
:)

(okay, please read into the tounge and cheek, + sarcasm + a little silliness here)

You didn't feel the seriousnessnessness?

BUt okay, was there any humour other than maybe diana thorneycroft's piece? And even that is less humor more shocking...

BUt you're right, contemporary artists don't make babies, they make art. hehe

ANd maybe it's because the offering at the show is all young artists, but it would be interesting to see how many have babies.

Some of Kathryn's drawings remind me of Andrew Courtnage's drawings. very cool.

these cartoons are hilarious.

i remember a few years back, at the Young Wpg Artists' show at Plug In, where Morley mentioned that none of them had kids, and they were all very confused/annoyed about that.

on some level, for sure, it's true, though. it's hard to do both. that's why, when i win the lotto, i will hire maids for all of us, and rent us all big sunny studios.

It's hard-ER, but no excuse to pick one over the other. I get a lil' hot on that subject. The artists with no kids living on grantfare producing undewhelming work. Maybe it's envy. At the same time, I believe that parenthood and it's struggles provide ample inspiration. My "art time" is usually a sacrifice of sleep. So i try to make the most of it everytime. The results vary yes, but my intentions are always pure. At the very least, I hope that translates in what I consider to be a weak piece. I have dreams of being able to do nothing but paint all day. They can also become nightmares if they lack the hunger to get them out. I'm starting to appreciate the compliments, which I took for many years as corner mouthed critisisms. I don't know. It could very well be that I simply envy the "free" artists. But if one is a full time artist, you'd better knock my socks off!

PS- Feb is National Rant Month

ha! no doubt it is.

i've been in a ranting mood for a while now. lucky for Mtl there's no one here to listen. :)

verification word: bhvti

p.s. i think (though i may be wrong) that there are pretty much no full-time visual artists in Wpg outside of the Art Lodgers. certainly there's no one who can afford to live off grant money, b/c there's just not enough of it to go around.

even your thorneycrofts and dempsey/millans and your ivan eyres and what not have all worked their whole lives.

anyway... keep on plugging.

like you said to me before--we signed up for this journey, so we might as well just enjoy it. :)

LOL!
I'm not about to quit or anything. I do enjoy painting obviously- perhaps I've keen coming off a bit cantankerous(sp???) about it. I'm not even sure what my problem is. I'm not against the succesful artist either, that's like the old skool "you sold out maaaaan" Maybe my problem is with contemporary art. Maybe my problem is just a lack of vitamin D in this month to freeze all months.

oh no, compared to morley, my nightmare truly realised.

I guess both YWA and Subconcious city is full of young artists, hence no babies.

I seem to recall a quote by Culleton in the Press about Winnipeg, the winter's are long and cold and either you're making art or making babies...

true enough, two very honourable pursuits.

That Culleton guy is full of...knowledge.

I thought you were going to say shaving cream. Both are true.
