1.The Greyhound station in Winnipeg is moving out to the airport. Canada Post is making the move as well, creating a travel/shipping hub for the city.
2. The Plug In Gallery wants to move into the bus station and turn it into an International Art Centre which would include their gallery as well as artist's apartments, student housing.
Interesting! Likelyhood of happening by my guestimation...23%

so... plug in wants to move to the bus station, or to cdn post?
That's a bummer move about the Bus station. Why move it so far from the core? Winnipeg has always suffered from unfortunate city planning.
By moving it next to the airport they hope to create a transportation hub. Get off the plane, get on a bus. Toronto is like that too, Montreal sort of is too.
That downtown real estate could be better used, get those big stinky buses out of there.
I think the unfortunate thing about Winnipeg is that it's planned around driving a car.
I had a lunch today that made me think that Winnipeg is a city without point. It used to be a city where two rivers met, invaluable for transportation. It used to be important for the trains. Now what is it important for?
Importance and purpose are different I think. Like something with no apparent purpose can still be important. Winnipeg may not have a clear, singular purpose anymore, but the same could probably be said for many cities. The importance is that it is home to many of us, an origin as well. Where we come from. I think Winnipeg has a spiritual and cultural importance to me personally as well as other people. Besides that, you can't exactly close a city down just cause there isn't a fur trade anymore. Where would you put your center for disease control?! Where would monsanto train their canola-head-gmo-engineers? hehe. That's not to say Winnipeg isn't a trajedy in some ways too. It's too cold, there are too many murders and poor people, yada yada, but MAN! It's cheap!
I don't know, I think both words work towards the same questions here. Importance is the signifigance of something, and the purpose is a reason for existing. And therein lies the puzzle, if Winnipeg has lost it's purpose, what does it signify? In that regard it has spiritual and cultural meaning as being something that has lost its purpose.
Montreal is nothing like that, the bus station is right in the middle of dowtown where it's supposed to be.
I agree that Winnipeg is a city designed for people with cars. I actually saw a nice little sign near the maryland bridge that read "remember bikers, cars have the right of way on the road". How insolent is that. Someone should tear that thing down.
I think Winnipeg is, and always has been, a great place to raise children. One of my professors recently adopted a baby. She said that, since she had moved to Winnipeg (several years ago) from Toronto, she had really noticed how family-oriented it is. How's that for a purpose, and importance!
