neo-expressionism

neo-expressionism, anyone?

zee germans, i think about 1900-1933.

this is by kathe kollwitz-- it was done late in life-- it's called "the arrival of death".

i love how she's mid conversation as death taps her on the LEFT shoulder (always the left, as carlos castenada will tell you).

kollwitz lost her son in wwI. there's a heartbreaking sculpture in france, by her, in the graveyard where her son is buried. it shows her and her husband, representing the older generation begging forgiveness from the younger for having sent them off to die.

That's interesting, I wonder how far that goes: the idea that death taps on the left?

Whatever the case, looks pretty intense.

yep, indeed.

i think now that maybe there's no "neo"--

it's just plain old german expressionism.

There is neo-expressionism but it was founded in the 1970's. Georg Baselitz was considered the founder of the mouvement which included artists like Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Another great German painter is Jorg Immendorf. The gallery in Montreal has one in the permanent collection and I used to stare at it eveytime I went.

1970 's doesen't sound so neo now. i guess if we want to do some expressionism we have to call it post neo expressionism =(. I like schnabel's broken plates, basquiat has a movie about him with some interesting art and clemente is relly wierd ( i cant get into laying eggs, hehe) Im gonna go look up immendorf and beselitz now. I think Richter and polke are called "german expressionist" sometimes.
