Uh, what's he talking about ;S

his personal vanity project

personal vanity project? what a silly comment, delivered, of course, under the protective cloak of anonymity.

cliff is not only a damn good artist, but he's also a damn nice person, who bends over backwards helping young and emerging artists in this city in any way he can.

shame on you, anon.

and tell me, what work of art is more than a "personal vanity project"? from this comment, one would assume that you believe that you make art out of an altruistic love for the rest of the world.

if you're gonna be rude, at least sign your name to it. or... just be nice instead.

or, to put it differently, you make the assumption (ass of u and me, as they say) that any art, ever, is done for any reason other than a personal vanity project.

it's all vanity. all of it. this blog included.

Meow!
Just for the record, it wan't me who called it the "vanity project". But here is something to think about...

"Anonymous" doesn't say Cliff is a bad artist, or selfish, or uniquely vain.

You responded saying:

"personal vanity project? what a silly comment..."

but then go on to say all art is vain?

"...what work of art is more than a "personal vanity project"?

What's more offensive '1 artist is vain', or 'all artists are vain'?

I'm sorry for also posting anonymously, but I don't want to make it easier for anyone to deduce their way to who is who and be able to direct their mis-spent anger.

Maybe we'd be better off without last few comments?

Is the art being made at Art-city by kids vain? Is elephant art vain? Is a memorial/tribute vain. There are many anonymous artists in history. I think sometimes people just want to make something beautiful, meaningfull, or express themselves.

Come on You guys. I am not on this blog 'cause I think I'm great, I'm on it because I think YOU people are great. Lets not slip into this negativity.

horray! things are heating up again!

silly was a poor choice of words perhaps, but that comment seemed pretty snarky to me-- especially since i emailed cliff the other day and told him to check out our blog since he's all over it these days.

so where did the "personal vanity project" quote come from? did he say that himeself? i can't seem to watch this whole video.

p.s. i never said "all artists are vain". what i said was that all art is a personal vanity project-- none of it any more or less than this exhibit, or this blog.

elephant art? i dunno about that one.

"and i looked at all the work my hands had done and saw that it was vanity, a chasing after the wind."-- ecclesiastes

the blue masked one has never posted an anom. ( just for the record ).
Those damn vain elephants, me me me- that`s all they express. "Look at me! I`m a painting pachyderm!"
okay, Wolfie has a point. I also believe all HUMAN art has a trace of vanity.
Ego plays no part in creativity?
Anoms always leave clues for us to deduce who they are..... the ultimate vanity? LOL
I kid. I`ve been circulating the blog for a bit now. I`m back.
You can all sleep better now.

I'm not sure I agree that all art (or other form of expression) is necessarily vain. Some of it can be an honest exploration, of the truth, of relationships, of the world around us. Sometimes expression comes from wanting to let something out, and maybe that is vanity, but sometimes it is merely the posing of a question, and then the long wait for a reply....

And kids too! I don't think a kid scribbling a picture of his family, or an imaginary place/creature is vain. It takes years of practice to lose that innocence.

lol anon, point taken. I only said traces of vanity.

Lorne Roberts said...

i don't really believe that all art is vain (or, as the writer of ecclesiastes says, that everything is vanity).

my contention was more w/ what i perceived as a slight against someone i respect and admire.

Well, Gentlecats...

I believe that you all have something to offer...in so many ways...and, in so many different directions...

However, I think the Elrose Watermuldar article on the latest issue of http://www.persiflage.ca/ may provide further insights into this discussion.

I think it's (ART) too large of a subject to bust down into a few simple phrases or anecdotes...
likely, this is the reason there are innumerable texts written on the subject...oh, and not to suggest that ART is indescribable,
simply that at this point, as Cliff offers (paraphrase, of course, with my own twist)is so bloody pluralistic and diverse, that it's nearly indescribable as a singular entity or process...(except for...for all you out there waiting to find fault...the simple fact that it is ART)

Right...now I feel all big and mighty...and vain...cuz all I want is to get laid and my point across...

Happy hours to you,
Schmed Feely
