The New 7 Wonders

There is a campaign underway at new7wonders.com to create a modern list of the seven wonders of the world (only Egypt's pyramids still remain from the original list of seven). And, you can vote for them yourself! Pictured above is a temple in Petra, Jordan, one of the contenders.

You know, I find it interesting how we conceive of wonder. All of the options are architectural wonders.

How 'bout the wonder of land? What about the rainforest, those are pretty wonderous? How 'bout wiping out world hunger by properly distributing resources? Wouldn't that be wonder?

All I see is the culture of civilisation in these options, and that is more blunder than wonder.

Otherwise an awesome post as always Sky, lov'em, so keep'em coming!

That's a good point Carlos, maybe we should vote on the "new7wonders.com".

The emphasis on architecture and engineering has to do with the fact that this was the original spirit of the whole Seven Wonders craze, which dates back to the ancient Greeks. While there have been other "Wonders" lists like the "Seven Wonders of the Natural World" the intent seems to be to marvel at the conceptual and creative power of man, not to mention the ability to construct nature-defying examples of human ingenuity and spirit. The whole intent is glorify civilization and human culture. I think though that one of the keys to this seven wonder business is that the object in question must be highly symbolic as well as physically and/or aesthetically imposing. All of the examples, ancient and modern, stand for something more than just physical beauty or a feat of engineering. Thus we have the Statue of Liberty, not the Hoover Dam, Christ the Redeemer and not the CN Tower, etc.
