How much do we really know?

Take for example 'Picasso'. The most well known painter in the world, Picasso led a full and complex life that we couldn't possible know everything about. Being art advocates, most of us know a thing or two. So how could we miss something obvious like his name. What is his full name anyways?

(see comments for an answer).

Picasso was baptized Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso. He was named after various saints and relatives. The "Picasso" is actually from his mother, Maria Picasso y Lopez. His father is named Jose Ruiz Blasco.

And ya, that's a Picasso painting above. Done at age 15

the synchronicities on ALfA are sure funny... we were just talking about this very painting at mimi's art party!

I think his Dad helped him with this painting.

The site said this was an "academic" painting. From the drawing academies I saw in Korea, that could mean it was the product of a bunch of profs too. Still, in regards to what we talked about bellow (cyclops-bunny) I should mention that I don't think technical proficiency is always a sign of an accomplished artist. As R.Genn says below, "Without progress, creators wither and die". That may be partly true, but some of them keep on painting or whatever for a long time, making the mistake that they've "solved" art (see Danby).

Oh, I've solved it too, but in order for me to show it to you it'll cost you $19.99 for 36 months.

That's better than the 50k that some people pay/owe universities!

the "without progress creators wither and die" thing seems a little fearful to me. from my perspective progress is inevitable as long as we are committed to living a creative life. our job as artists is to ensure that we operate as effective channels for the creative force, which is something greater than us. the creative force manifests in many areas of our lives. if we're stuck in one area, it will bust out in another that will eventually and coincidentally lead to progress in the original area...

then again sometimes our interest in a particular form of expression has to wither and die by boredom in order for our passions to be reborn in a more appropriate area of expression for our true nature.
