Well if this poor little girl isn't an achoholic, and ever stumbles across this utube bashing, it will surely drive her to drink. Where is the mercy for the ignorant, or synonymously innocent? To be honest, my answer to those questions, while they might have been worded better would not reflect any higher understanding. I managed to get through school with an equal level of ignorance towards many historical events, including WW1. I just recently looked at Wikipedia to ease my self consciousness, and it isn't easy to admit, but hey, I'm sure there are some areas of knowledge where I could stump any of you (for example salamander husbandry). So the question remains, am I a representative of our failing education system, or as our utube host suggests "a f-n retard" ?
Are any of you brave enough to admit you also don't know squat about WW1 or other equally important historical events? (Jose the history snob you are excluded)
Here is another stunning admission: I was not able to say the months in order until after I was 20 years old. I missed that day or something. It wasn't until my low self esteem drove me to memorize them on my own that I learned. I still can't tell you how many days are in each month (except February =).
Someone else please reveal a similar experience... please!
I see your point, Dave, and it's well made (and taken). It's easy to ridicule the anonymous anonymously, yet these are real people after all.
Still, I think there is a deeper point - that there is rampant ignorance in the world, especially where it might matter most, among the citizens of possibly the most powerful and influential country that has ever existed.
Probably these posts (well, not here on Alfa, but the youtube stuff etc.) will have some negative impact on the actual people involved, but it would be even better if people started seeing the bigger picture. I can't say I'm too sure as to how to achieve that, however.
I'm a terrible speller. I still have to recite, "i before e except after c" and know grammar only by intuition. I still look up the proper use for semi colon.
Interstingly, I once appeared on the CBC, interviewed when they were doing that cross canada quiz about how much Canadians know about Canadian history. I answered 9 of the 10 questions correctly, the one I got wrong was "who was the first Canadian in space" (Marc Garneau is the answer that will now be forever branded on my brain
I was a giggly 24 years old. The clip they showed looked somehting like this: (the clip did not show my correct answers) I turn to my friend and start laughing because i didn't know the answer. I think it sounded something like this " like uh, I don't know, do you know" uh, uh, giggle, giggle, uh I can't believe I don't know giggle giggle"...yeah, so the next week every single person I know saw that clip.
I have a major in Canadian History but always found the dates and declarations etc. difficult to keep straight... ask me about the red or black figure pottery of the ancient world and I can talk for hours and in detail.

And you're telling me that kids in the U.S. can't drink until they're 21?? These are clearly the ramblings of an chronic alcoholic!
Tragedy has darkened the sky.
Say it ain't so.

Cara, here's the difference between your interview and these other two: you were willing to say "I don't know".
