Well said Stan. It's good that you are able to make a comment on this.
My video attempts to glorify the burt's demise. It's not about remorse, although I do feel that for burning my friend's piece of art, the video isn't about that.
It's too bad that I don't have any footage/materials on it's creation, nor do I understand the intentions of the creators. If the intentions of the creators were to build a symbol to reflect Burt's greatness, would it have been better to make a piece that looked like him and also that wasn't made of a discarded coat rack and some newspaper and chickenwire? Surely, didn't you see this as a caraciture(sp?) of the man?
Where I thought this video might heal, maybe it has just agrivated the wound.
IF you have footage/pictures of th e burt's creation I would be more than happy to create a video that does more what you hoped that piece would do. But then again I don't think that the burning is about the statue's glory.
I'd like to hear some of the other's thoughts on this.
In many ways I see this whole event as a metaphor that speaks to my relationship with Dangerman. If you look closely at the art that we make and its similarities, the burning of this sculpture defines a breaking point for me. I'm not sure I'm articulating this well, and some may just think I was an ass through this all.
Can art reinforcement be applied to such an act? How does this piece relate to the Chicken of God? To blind contour drawing? To the Label gallery?
Obviously this raises a lot of questions for me.
and lastly, I'd have to argue that this doesn't glorify any specific person, but rather, it glorifies the event, which was aprading this sculpture around(like the chicken) and then ceremoniously burning in as though it had reached it's zenith of potential that very day.
okay, I've rambled enough.
ps. let me guess, I can't show this video at the last label show. pps.does anyone think I should remove this from the blog?
Those responsible for this have yet to publicly say the simple words: "I was wrong. I'm sorry."
So how about it?
When that has happened, then we can talk about letting it go and/or moving on.
Until then, it was, and remains, and act of moral poverty, a huge violation of a friend's trust and goodwill, that there has been no real public closure on.
It's Dan's and Justin's power to decide when we should let this go and move on, no one else's.
Your moralism, I think, at this point, is poorly founded. The only apologies that needed to happen were those between Dangerman and the Destroyers, and those have occurred. At the very least, I speak for myself.
And for the record, if it does please you so, under the age of the electronic public, I apologize for playing my role.
But like I said, that came a long time ago. And it's too bad that, in this case, little has come from the ashes.
Maybe it's also time for Wolfie to apologise for not convincing us it was the wrong thing to do. He was the last wall of reason on that very day, pancakes in his mouth, telling us not to do it, and in fact, almost coming with us at one point.
"you could have stopped us" ? Sounds like a defence lawyer LOL!
You can have it for all I care. I don't know how much more can can possibly milk it, but you're creative. You can even claim that you made it for all I care! Congratulations James! it's a boy!
I wouldn't claim I made that thing, it's your baby. a 20' chicken maybe on the other hand( oh wait, Krahn claims he built that one, hehe...)
I made the video because the Burt and its burning is a very important part of our collective history, and for the last show it seemed perfect. I worked hard on this video for us.
And it's really not about who made it or burned it. The burt was the third installment of papier mache sculpture made at the label (tiki god, chicken, burt), and the third one to go the way of the dodo.
Some hilarious performance art to say the least. And possibly some of the best collaborating that we have EVER FUCKING done!
the chicken was the greatest thing i ever single-handedly built with my own four hands.
i also wrote Beethovens 9th and invented mustard.
in addition i sniffed glue when i was a lad. true story.
i wish i could be there for the label's closing show. we could drink ourselves into a circle of burbon have a push-up competition, learn from each other, and then destroy each other with hugs.
and then go to falfel or the marborugh and laugh at each other.
truly true fact:
i love you guys and your ideas. whether they are good or bad. at least we have something to talk about. no?
and i'm off to bed.
PS: JESUS, i miss you ladies and gentlemen. not you lorne.
Ya, no doubt, he was eerily quiet, especially on the highway going out there. We expected some resistance, but I believe he had too much dignity. He knew what was happening, and he understood his role in it. G-d bless him.
His last rights were a spectacle. To the Burton Cummings Theatre, Community Centre, and of course, the Sals on the bridge. People weren't sure who he was, but that didn';t stop them from being awestruck.
As the artist who produced this video, I found the creation of this important. The reaction to it isn't what I expected. My actions during the making of the footage no longer feel like they could be my actions today. By going back and editting this into the video it feels like I have relived that moment for myself, and with the creators and destroyers, and realise how horrible an act it was.
Although, those who have seen the video and don't know the story have offered me analayses and appreciation(little of) have said a few interesting things.
1. From a music fan of the Guess who, the person said I must hate the band, which isn't the truth. I love their music, but from what I've heard about Burton, he's a bit of a dick. 2. That if you showed Burton the Burt he probably wouldn't recognize himself. That might say something about Burton or the likeness. 3. The music track is irritating.
With that said, I think that I will remove the video. This piece is obviously only important to me.
I say that as someone who has no knowledge of what happened before, during, or after the making of the video. And also, as someone who didn't get to see the video before it was removed.

KK,
You can handle it when the spot light is not on you
And you video glorifies the destroyers and ignores the intentions of burt's creator. Posting your video shows no remorse for your past actions.
(Nothing like public humiliation to keep you grounded)

water under the bridge
I disagree.

hey i'm a know-nothing-wasn't-around, was that really a 10-foot burton/louis ? wawaweewa ! beauty.
public closure sounds like fun for the whole family, not that i have any clue what's happening here.

I think we've already apologized Wolfie. In fact, there was even a monetary transaction in that regard as well.
But in some ways saying sorry will never work.
But with the gallery closing I think this is the perfect time to air out the closets.
Justin and Dan, I'm truly sorry for burning your papier mache sculpture of Burton Cummings without your permission.
I thought that this video would pay tribute to the whole thing.
word verification: cafqe
apolgies are nice.
and i apologize if i was "moralizing".
but to say this is only b/t Dan and co is to ignore issues of the repurcussions for the larger AlfA community.
it didn't just affect three or four people--it affected all of us--as friends, as collaborators, etc.
so a public apology (offered here for what i believe is the first time) was, in fact, quite necessary.
so i'm done with it.
You cannot accept what wasn't offered to you.
And I'm curious, how did it impact you?
Maybe it's also time for Wolfie to apologise for not convincing us it was the wrong thing to do. He was the last wall of reason on that very day, pancakes in his mouth, telling us not to do it, and in fact, almost coming with us at one point.

well, from the looks of it it seems that poor old Burt went down without a struggle, god bless his soul.
Ya, no doubt, he was eerily quiet, especially on the highway going out there. We expected some resistance, but I believe he had too much dignity. He knew what was happening, and he understood his role in it. G-d bless him.

Would anyone like to comment on the video?
In a sense, you can't honestly think that the video still holds any artistic component that merits appreciation or analysis?
The video is crazy, it's intense, it's mean, it's what it was, and what it is.
At this point, I can't see any way to divorce the video, in any aspect of its content, from the emotions it represents.
And in that sense, I don't think it beneficial to analyse the content of those emotions, too many casualties, myself included.
:)

We all make mistakes.
I say that as someone who has no knowledge of what happened before, during, or after the making of the video. And also, as someone who didn't get to see the video before it was removed.
