Renzo Gracie

Like I told you before, I will die shitting on my pants, like everybody else, but knowing who I was, you know, knowing for sure and truly who I was.

Is that a Gracie quote?

He's going to shit ON his pants?

Weird.

ouch.

i think academics, much like pugilism and the ultimate fighting championship, pushes you to grapple with your own identity and be prepared to define/defend it.

gracie is prob'ly spanish-speaking, yeah, or portugese. so his english may be a little off.

interesting quote, though.

but i think there are other ways to do this thing he speaks of.

and by other ways, i mean other ways besides punching another man in the temple until he's unconscious.

You're in the mortal coil whether you like it or not.

I just find hitting someone in the head very honest, as long as both parties are into it.

I think what he's saying here is we're unltimately all going to die the same way, you know, when the body's facilities decide to 'crap out', and he feels that he's at a point where he's content with who he is, and possibly, who he was supposed to be.

I often think of who I am supposed to be. I look to my ancestors for some of that. I think of my brother too, who he was, and how as his little brother I spent a lifetime trying to emulate him. And then there are my friends and how I admire and them and try to mirror the behaviors that are comendable (and less than commendable).
