Florence Nightingale

And so is the world put back by the death of every one who has to sacrifice the development of his or her peculiar gifts (which were meant, not for selfish gratification, but for the improvement of that world) to conventionality. [1852]

No man, not even a doctor, ever gives any other definition of what a nurse should be than this -- 'devoted and obedient.' This definition would do just as well for a porter. It might even do for a horse. It would not do for a policeman. [1859]

Nice.

It's interesting that she was thinking this way about a hundred and fifty years ago, yet some nurses in the present time don't even attempt to look below the tip of the iceberg.

wow. two fabulous quotes.

Duff Roblin, premier of Manitoba (1916): I don't want some shrew in a petticoat talking politics at me. I want a nice, gentle creature to bring me my slippers and a newspaper and my pipe.

Nellie McClung: It sounds like our premier is in need of a dog.

*****

Duff Roblin: Nice women don't want the vote.

Nellie McClung: Get the thing done and let them howl.
