Translation Project #1

So... in my remarkably frustrating and ongoing attempt to learn French, I have been trying to translate lyrics of songs I like from French to English lately.

Here's my first, the song "Ballad a Toronto" by Jean LeLoup.

(The image is from www.Voir.ca)

I've added a non-offical YouTube video too.

The words to this song are crazy beautiful.

Regarde ! Les étoiles !

Tant qu’il y aura des étoiles
sur le bord de la route
nous devrons nous arrêter

Tant qu’il y aura des rivières
nous pourrons
nous baigner

Et tant qu’il y aura le feu
Nous irons peu à peu
Été comme hiver

Vagabond, millionnaire, amoureux…zilliardaires
Vagabond, millionnaire, amoureux

Attend j’ai quelque chose à te dire

Millionnaire, amoureux…zilliardaires
Vagabond, millionnaire, amoureux

(my translation follows)

Today, smoke from the fires
Yellows the sky and reddens the sun,
And the stars in the north
remind us of death,

but you call me anyway.

And now you sleep on the seat
While I drive,

and I hope that we never arrive.

Look! The stars!

As long as there are stars
on the roadside
we have to stop

As long as there are rivers
we can swim in
we'll swim

And as long as there's fire
We'll go onwards,
Summer, like winter.

Vagabond, millionaire, lover… zillionaire.
Vagabond.
Millionaire.
Lover.

Time passes, and one day we're old
And there's nothing left but the pride
of knowing we loved the best we could,
or the haunting agony
of not having understood in time:

Listen! I have so much to tell you!

As long as there are stars
on the roadside
we have to stop

As long as there are rivers
we can swim in
we'll swim

And with nothing to fear now
but uncertain destinations,

I'll never forget the stars
on the road to Toronto

or that day
on the beach, Lake Ontario--

Millionaire, lover, zillionaire.

Wanderer.
Millionaire.
Lover.
